Shopify is the default place people start a dropshipping store, and it is a reasonable choice. What is less reasonable is how the model gets sold — as a low-cost business, when the costs are mostly just invisible at the start.

Here is the full stack, and the arithmetic that decides the outcome.

> **Key Takeaways**
>
> - **Shopify plans run $39 to $399 a month**, with card rates of 2.9% + 30¢ down to 2.5% + 30¢ ([Shopify](https://www.shopify.com/pricing), retrieved 2026-07-21).
> - **Using a payment provider other than Shopify Payments adds 2%** on Basic — often more than the plan fee itself.
> - **The app bill is usually the largest line** and appears in no plan comparison.
> - **Two numbers decide profitability**: customer acquisition cost, and return rate. Neither is a Shopify setting.

## How Does Dropshipping on Shopify Work?

**Dropshipping** is a model where you list a supplier's products, and the supplier ships each order directly to your customer. You never hold stock and you pay the supplier only after a sale.

On Shopify the mechanics are: install an app that connects to a supplier network, import products into your catalogue, set retail prices, and when an order arrives the app forwards it to the supplier.

Shopify supplies the storefront, checkout, and payments. Everything about the product — quality, packaging, delivery time, returns — belongs to a supplier you have never met.

For how the model compares to print-on-demand and holding inventory, see our [fulfilment model guide](/dropshipping-vs-print-on-demand-2026).

## What Does It Actually Cost?

Four layers, only one of which is on the pricing page.

**1. The plan**

| Plan | Monthly | Annual |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39/mo | $29/mo |
| Grow | $105/mo | $79/mo |
| Advanced | $399/mo | $299/mo |

**2. Card processing**, 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced.

**3. The third-party payment fee.** If you use a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. On a $20,000 month that 2% is $400 — ten times the Basic plan fee. For most dropshippers, staying on Shopify Payments is simply the cheaper answer.

**4. Apps.** The supplier connector, and usually more besides. This is routinely the largest line and it appears in no comparison table.

Then the two costs that are not Shopify's at all, and that decide everything.

## The Two Numbers That Actually Decide It

**Customer acquisition cost.** Dropshipped products are, by construction, products other people can also list. You rarely compete on uniqueness, so you compete on advertising — and advertising is priced by auction.

**Return rate.** 19.3% of online sales were returned in 2025 ([National Retail Federation](https://nrf.com/research/2025-retail-returns-landscape), retrieved 2026-07-21). For a dropshipper this hurts roughly three times as much as for a stockholding retailer, because returning a low-value item to an overseas supplier costs more than the item. You refund the customer, absorb the product and both legs of shipping, and never see the goods.

Our [fulfilment model guide](/dropshipping-vs-print-on-demand-2026) runs the full arithmetic on 100 orders and shows a 70% gross margin ending in a small net loss once realistic acquisition cost and returns are applied. The lesson is not the answer — it is that these two inputs swamp everything else, including your choice of plan.

## Where Shopify Dropshipping Breaks

**Delivery-time claims.** The FTC requires a reasonable basis, grounded in objective criteria, for whatever shipping window you advertise — or 30 days if you advertise none ([FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/business-guide-ftcs-mail-internet-or-telephone-order-merchandise-rule), retrieved 2026-07-21). Supplier marketing copy is not a reasonable basis. Your own measurements are. See [is dropshipping legal](/is-dropshipping-legal).

**Undifferentiated catalogues.** If your storefront lists the same products, at similar prices, with the same supplier photography as a dozen other stores, there is no reason to buy from you and no reason to rank you.

**Checkout leakage.** Average cart abandonment is 70.22% across 50 studies, led by extra costs appearing late at 40% and delivery being too slow at 20% ([Baymard Institute](https://baymard.com/lists/cart-abandonment-rate), retrieved 2026-07-21). Both are structural dropshipping weaknesses, and both are addressable by showing shipping cost and delivery window early.

**Supplier drift.** Delivery times creep up quietly. If you set your storefront's promise once and never revisit it, you can be out of compliance for months. Re-measure quarterly. See [choosing dropshipping suppliers](/best-dropshipping-suppliers-2026).

## How to Improve the Odds

- **Pick a low-return category.** It moves your economics more than any product-research tool.
- **Measure supplier delivery yourself**, then publish a conservative window and hit it. Shoppers prefer a slower delivery that arrives on time to a faster one that does not ([McKinsey](https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/logistics/our-insights/what-do-us-consumers-want-from-e-commerce-deliveries), retrieved 2026-07-21).
- **Show shipping cost on the product page**, not at checkout.
- **Replace supplier photography and copy.** It is the only lever you fully control. See [product photography](/ai-product-photography-no-studio) and [product descriptions](/ai-product-descriptions-that-convert).
- **Track cost per purchase**, not clicks. That number is your business model.
- **Audit the app bill quarterly.** Apps that overlap are common and invisible.

## Is Shopify the Right Platform For It?

It is a solid default, and its app ecosystem is the deepest. The costs to weigh are the third-party payment fee if you need another processor, and the app bill — which for dropshipping stores is often buying automation rather than features.

If most of your app list is automating catalogue, descriptions, imagery, and order routing, price platforms where that is included rather than assembled. Runner AI supports dropshipping through CJ Dropshipping directly: bring your own CJ account and pay only your plan's standard transaction fee, or import from the Runner catalogue with no CJ account at wholesale plus shipping plus a 10% fee charged only on a sale. Terrance describes [how that works in practice](/dropshipping-on-runner-ai).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much does it cost to start dropshipping on Shopify?

The plan starts at $39 a month ($29 annual), plus card processing at 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, plus apps. Inventory costs nothing upfront. Your real budget line is advertising.

### Is Shopify dropshipping still profitable?

It can be, but profitability is decided by acquisition cost and return rate rather than by markup. Model both for your category before committing.

### Do I need Shopify Payments?

Not required, but using another provider adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, and 0.6% on Advanced — on top of what your provider charges. For most dropshippers, Shopify Payments is cheaper.

### Which plan should I start on?

Basic. The card-rate savings on higher plans do not cover the plan increase until you are doing substantial monthly card volume. See [Shopify pricing](/shopify-pricing-2026).

### What are the best products to dropship?

Start with a category that has a low return rate rather than a trending product. See [best dropshipping products](/best-dropshipping-products).
